In order to be happy you have to be grateful. Most people think that you have to be happy first in order to be grateful, but in fact it is the other way around. Grateful people, even those who have tremendous misfortunes are happier than those who feel entitled. [TED: David Steindl-Rast: Want to be happy? Be grateful]
This week I’ve been in a slump. The week began with a bad day at work and spiraled downward from there. And once I arrived to that dark place in my heart, it was difficult to pull myself out. But because I am there so infrequently, I allowed myself to stay for a few days, while I waited patiently for something to pull me back up.
On my way home yesterday, I at sat quietly on the ferry and thought about the impending Thanksgiving holiday. In my head I began to give thanks for all which I am grateful. I suppose I began to pray.
After a few moments, I floated back to the place where I normally try and live – a place of sustained gratitude; thankful for the each moment that I am given and the opportunity that the moment affords me. I arrived at a place of joy.
Happy Thanksgiving Everybody!
